It is important patient’s pick a cardiologist relevant to their problems. Most cardiologists have ‘special interests’ in certain heart conditions and it is important that a patient picks a cardiologist relevant to their needs. Patient’s who suffer with cardiac arrhythmia causing palpitations, for example, are better off seeing a cardiologist who specialises in arrhythmia (known as an electrophysiologist). On the other hand if a patient is suffering from suspect angina they would be better off seeing a specialist who deals with the intervention of coronary disease (called angioplasty). The other option is to see a cardiologist who can rapidly diagnose the cause of the patient’s symptoms and then be referred onto a separate cardiologist who can deal with that specific diagnosis. It can often be easier to do things this way than seek out a specific specialist first. The main reason for this is that it is important to get a diagnosis as quickly as possible and to be referred on if this is required. Cardiologists will have ‘inside knowledge’ about who is best to treat particular conditions.
