Motorsport
There are stringent requirements for drivers participating in Motorsport and can be found in the Motorsport UK Blue Book. For those that require medical examinations in support of their international licence the rules are present in the FIA sporting code. The Autocycle Union (ACU) also require drivers to undergo a medical examination and cardiology tests depending on their age.
For an FIA international licence the requirements vary dependent on the age of the driver. An annual medical examination is required for any driver irrespective of their age. For drivers under the age of 45 there is the requirement for a resting ECG to be performed every 2 years. For those over the age of 45 an exercise stress ECG is required.
Resting 12 lead ECG

Exercise stress ECG
For drivers over the age of 45 the FIA and ACU requirements for continuing a licence are that an exercise stress ECG is required every 2 years. This test is conducted using a treadmill and involves walking at a a progressive incline for a total of 9 minutes (this is known as the Bruce protocol). At Birmingham Cardiology we are able to arrange this test and report to be completed in a single appointment.
Fees
The fee for an exercise stress ECG along with a cardiologist’s report is £350. A complete report including copies of the ECG are provided after your appointment.

Why see a specialist privately?
