There have been a lot of articles recently about the use of novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs for short) for the treatment of stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. These are a substitute for warfarin and do offer many advantages over warfarin. They do not require INR monitoring, thus avoiding regular visits to the GP or anticoagulation clinic to have the INR check. There are no troublesome INR level fluctuations due to diet or drug interactions, making it convenient for patients with atrial fibrillation who have a varied diet or are on multiple medications. Finally, they are also though to be safer, with many of these agents quoting a lower risk of bleeding, particularly bleeding in the brain. There are 4 main NOAC types on the market presently – Dabigatran, Rivaroxaban, Apixiban and the newly released Edoxaban.
If you are an atrial fibrillation patient whether it is newly diagnosed, or have had it for many years NOAC’s may be a suitable alternative for warfarin. You may already be on warfarin and a looking to change, or you may be taking aspirin or nothing at all.
